About Sue and Gouna Gardens
Susan Torrance née Etherington, was born in Knysna, South Africa, in 1971. Her love for gardening comes from her mom, who loves gardening just as much as she does – and who, to this day, still has the most beautiful garden in her neighbourhood.
“Growing up in Knysna was special, settled, safe and uncomplicated. My sister and I would spend every free moment fishing, on the beach, or sailing with our parents.
It wasn’t long before life took me sailing, too. I started a career in yachting, working on the Flotilla yachts in Greece for three years. This is how I met my husband Ben (one day in a Greek bay) – and where my love for food began.
Ben and I moved onto the superyachts and, after enrolling in a number of cooking courses, I started to chef onboard. I became aware of the foods available worldwide – of food quality, additives, farming methods, and general wellbeing that can come through food.
After my son was born in France, we moved back to South Africa. We bought a smallholding in Gouna, Knysna, where I continued my food journey by growing my own. My vegetable gardens grew through trial and error, and my passion for gardening kept feeding my soul.
I began vegetable garden consulting, creating organic vegetable and herb gardens – including companion planting and permaculture methods – thus creating my gardening business, Gouna Gardens… and planting the seed for this book.”
